About Phil Herring
After 45 years in marketing communications, Phil has seen a thing or two.
Experience and accomplishments
SailboatOwners.com, Founder, CMO, and technology manager
SBO was one among the earliest e-commerce sites, vertically integrated for owners of popular production sailboats. With active forums, part selection wizards, user-contributed photos, how-to articles, specs, and boat reviews, it’s highly interactive. All sites are in the top three organic Google search results for primary keywords. Phil also developed an opt-in list of 30,000 boat owners, mailed weekly, and was responsible for all site content and 90% of site development.
Herring/Newman, Founder, President
HN grew from a freelance practice to Seattle’s fourth largest ad agency with $55 million in billings. Clients included Nike, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Westin Hotels, and Australia Tourism. The agency was three times named one of Washington’s best places to work and was twice on the INC 500 list of fastest growing companies.
As the agency grew Phil’s roles included account manager, copywriter, creative director, CEO, and Rainmaker. His last three years were spent as a keynote speaker and lecturer at advertising and marketing events at cities including Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Dallas, Detroit, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, New York, Atlanta, Melbourne, Auckland, and a number of Greyhound stops Phil can’t recall at the moment.
During those years he also taught copywriting and response strategies for ADWEEK Seminars, the School of Visual Concepts, and the University of Washington Professional & Continuing Education program.
